Urban Community Development is a relatively new department in CES, which first started in mid-2011.
We seek to break the cycle of poverty by creating educational, social and economic opportunities for individuals, families and communities, so that they can take control of their own lives and to effect change in their communities based on justice, equality and mutual respect.
We partner with local churches, NGOs, corporations, community leaders and local authorities to work together with the urban poor communities in empowering and advocating for their needs.
So far we have started to build bridges with the urban poor communities in Kota Damansara and Lembah Subang, to foster an atmosphere of care, trust and mutual respect by introducing programmes like drum-circles, clown shows and free mobile medical clinics. Over 30 children from the PPR flats in these 2 communities, have not only learnt drumming skills but also gained confidence and self esteem as they now participate in the various community events. We are in the process of introducing Community Tuition Classes and Football / Life-coaching programmes for the community youth.
Our first Community Financial Literacy Class which took off in March 2012, saw 50 women from poor households take this ONE STEP forward towards economic stability, by participating in our 10-month Financial Literacy Programme (in collaboration with Malaysian CARE and 3 local churches). Often stuck in a poverty cycle to balance meagre income and putting food on the table, many of these poor families fall prey to loan sharks and quick get-rich schemes. In this programme, the participants will learn the value of money, how to budget and create good habits, how to deal with debts and how to save. It is our hope that this will lead to future opportunities in micro-enterprise and full educational employment, and eventually out of the poverty cycle.
Please partner with us as we seek to bring an experience of the Kingdom of God into these communities.
